The Great Swingset Debate and Brandi's Big Day

So I may have mentioned once or twice that I'm not cut out for Guam life? Maybe just a few times. I'm just SO SPOILED and SO used to having everything at my beck and call...I mean, I was freaking out over the summer when I spent a month in Biloxi and had to drive an hour to get to a Target. What I wouldn't give....

Anyway. We picked Big Ugly because of the amazing backyard. We wanted a swingset, naturally. My kids need to......uh, have a safe way to get their energy out? Does that sound like a nice way to say 'get out of my sight so I don' throttle them half to death'? You get the idea. So we figured we'd get one of those big huge wooden things that everyone in suburban America has, with the yellow slides? Mia has one, every kid we knew in VA had one- it just honestly never even occurred to me that we'd have a hard time finding one.

They don't have them here! Not even at Home Depot. I guess maybe the concern is that the wood will rot in all the humidity and rain? Who knows. But we don't live on base, where there's a playground every three houses, so we had to do something. Our neighbor has a metal one, you know, the old school swingset that we had when we were little? But those are almost guaranteed to rust out in a year or less. So we went to the NEX and picked out a cheesy plastic thing that the Grandpa Matt in my head was screaming "this is crap!!! Don't buy this!!!" But they said that they didn't have any in stock and didn't know when they'd get more. Could we special order one? Nope, they'll call us when they get some and we can hurry in and buy it then. So we drove to Andersen (and around the entire island) and got the same story.

But today, we were at the NEX (we go about four times a day. it's hard living out of suitcases in an empty house!) and just to get me to stop nagging him, Nick asked the toy lady if they had any swingsets. And they had ONE! So we took it. Honestly, I didn't even bother to look and see which one it was, I just wanted one, no matter what.

So here it is, in all its glory. Think they like it?

To make the day even better, it's Brandi's Birthday! Hooray for friends in Guam!!!
We headed over there for a bday dinner and cake and ice cream. She had a sprinkler set up...

...but I forgot the kids suits. Like Scott's makeshift trunks?
So that was our day. Quite productive, in my own opinion. We got the van yesterday. I didn't realize how much I'd missed it, until Nick pulled into the driveway and I actually got a little choked up. Should be a total wreck getting our household goods, right? Sheesh. I miss blogging so much, but it's a total hassle right now because the laptop only works in the playroom! I hope once we have our wireless stuff (you know I like to think of all that as magic) I'll be able to blog more regularly again. Keep the faith Constant Readers...things are going to get better.
Right?

Island Adventure

So today, we inadvertently took a little tour of the island. Sound like fun? Let me be a little more specific: we took a little tour of the ENTIRE island. Like, around the whole perimeter. We started out at home, which I guess is sorta down south, on the western shore. We went to Andersen to get a swing set (that they didn't have) which is way up north and I think over on the eastern side. So that takes care of the western and northern part of the perimeter. So, since they were having a festival and we wanted to avoid traffic, instead of going home along with western shore (which we drive up and down every single day and know quite well) we went back down the eastern shore. And since we didn't have our handy cartoon map, we missed a turn. So instead of cutting across to get to our little western home, we went ALL THE WAY DOWN to the southern tip of the island, then back up the other side.

Phew, I'm exhausted just retelling it! Thank the Lord Brandi had Ava, so it was just the boys, and they were so well behaved! My guys. Long story short (er) we got some great pictures of the island, which I guess is good enough for me. Gotta learn how to deal with the whole depth of field issue though- these would have been AWESOME if I could have focused like I wanted to!

So here we are, still on Andersen, heading down to Taragee beach. That's not how you spell it, but that's what it sounds like. Looks like I'm driving onto the set of Lost, right? Or even better- Jurassic Park! So you're driving on this little two lane road, down a hill like it's no big deal, and then the trees to the right drop off and BAM! you're hit with this view. Not a bad life, right?

This is down at the actual beach. Mom, I didn't see any sign of any sort of monster. Sorry.

This was later on in our travels. Wish I could be a little more specific Dad, but seriously, no idea where we were. Sure was amazing though, right?

My favorite part of the day...a random castle bridge. Not leading to anything, not any sort of park or playground- just your everyday castle bridge.

My beloved mountains. I think I'm gonna throw a football over them mountains :)

Internet

We're out of that hotel, in our house, with furniture from a loaner locker on base. We have cable, dvr, a TV that our AMAZING landlady lent us, a phone where we can call the states UNLIMITED, beds for all the kids...what else am I missing? Oh yeah, sheets and blankets and pots and pans, all lent by friends (is lent even a word? I mean, besides like the season of lent. I don't feel like lent is the past tense of loan, but I don't really like the word loaned...hmm) oh and a high chair so that we don't have to feed the baby in our laps. That's really nice too.

But it took forever (at least, it felt like forever to me!) to get the internet working! And now it only works in one room (the playroom) so that sort of sucks. I didn't want to have to set up the big desk in here, because I think we can all imagine how much fun Scott has with all the usb ports, and the CD thingy that comes out like a tray where he can put things and then push it back in, and the paper in the printer...ugh. Hopefully Nick can call up the company and tell them they have to either get it working in the entire house (is that too much to ask? For our house to be able have internet where it's supposed to?) or we're going with another company. Unfortunately, looks like Nick is gonna be under water sooner than later, so we'll see how that goes.

Biggest news of the weekend? The kids start preschool on Monday!!! HOORAY! I took them for a PPD on Friday and then we stopped by the preschool to pay a deposit to secure our spot or whatever, and the girl (woman, she probably doesn't want to be called a girl) said that they can start Monday, even though I won't get their physicals filled out till April fifth (thanks Tricare! You're so efficient! Nothing like booking forty minutes worth of appts for something that's gonna take the NP two minutes MAX to sign!) So that's a huge weight off my shoulders. And you know what? I don't even feel guilty for admitting that I can't handle my kids anymore. They haven't left my side since Feb 4th. They both ask me every single day "are we going to school today? WWWWHHHHHYYYY not?" They're as desperate to interact with tiny people who don't scream at them to "BE QUIET THE BABY IS SLEEPING!" as I am to have a little peace space under my feet. So, supermoms, gloat all you want. I never wanted to be a supermom anyway.

No pics to post because it's really just too much of a hassle right now. But starting Monday, I have a feeling I'll be back to my old self, so maybe the blog will get a little more interesting. Right now, Brandi has taken Ava to Lee's soccer game, Nick has taken Scott to the NEX to get a swing set, Warren is sleeping off his shots from yesterday (and a terrible case of Guam crud to go with it) and I can finally watch Lost on abc.com.

Ahhh, now THIS is the island life I was looking forward to.

Big Ugly

Well here she is, in all her glory!

This is the view FROM the front door...

And this is looking back AT the front door.

The kitchen. Man, can you imagine?

The GIGANTIC playroom. You can't tell, but trust me, it's really huge.

The boys room...

A close up of the rickety fans I was telling you about...

The master bedroom...

Master bathroom.

Main bathroom.

Pantry.

Shop.

And the best part....the backyard.

Pictures

So here's some pics of my new life in paradise!

Here's Warren, in a rare moment of not crying.

The view from my hotel balcony...
The little part of the water park, where we spend ALL our time...

Ava and Lee!

The view from the water park...

And here's Baby Easton. Notice he's not crying. So weird to see a baby who's NOT crying nonstop!
