September 13: Five Minute Friday

(I figured I'd do a 5 Minute Friday as a quick and easy way to knock out another blog post.)

For those who don't know Gypsy Mama, this is what she has to say about her weekly writing challenge: (side note, does she not go by Gypsy Mama anymore? It's been a long time since I went to her physical blog, it's still listed as Gypsy Mama in my feedly, but I don't want to be offensive...)

"Here’s how it all got started, back story, details and all. The short version is:

1. Write for 5 minutes flat for pure unedited love of the written word. (On your blog or in the comments).
2. Link back here and invite others to join in {you can grab the button code in my blog footer}.
3. Go leave some comment props for the five minute artist who linked up before you.
It’s a great way to catch your breath at the end of a long week."

The prompt this week: MERCY.

Crap. I feel like such a moron. I'm not entirely clear on the difference between mercy and grace. In fact, I'm not ENTIRELY sure about either one.  Grace is a word we use all the time, I use it all the time, but I don't know the English Oxford definition.  Forgiveness? Elegance? I know that it's GOD'S GRACE, as opposed to grace from someone else...but mercy? People talk about merciful kings, right? So if grace is God's forgiveness, what is mercy? Isn't mercy forgiveness too? Am I wrong about grace?

I feel like grace is more of a general calm, and maybe mercy is forgiveness after a sin? Leniency? I know there's a passage about goodness and mercy, right? Surely goodness and mercy will follow you all of the days of your lives?

This is the worst Five Minute Friday post EVER.

Regardless.  I know that the main point of fact is that we don't deserve grace OR mercy.  If I were God, I wouldn't be very merciful, which I guess is the point. How can He have mercy on us while we stumble around down here like a bunch of morons? I trip on my figurative feet a thousand million times a day.  For every good and pure and holy thought that pops into my head, there's five more full of anger and spite and self pity. Why would God have mercy on me? Is that where grace comes in? How does-

Time's up.

Dammit. That's NOT how I wanted my return to Five Minute Friday to go. I wanted to be all deep and spiritual and awesome. Shrug.  Win some lose some? Engelbrecht out.

  1. You brought a smile to face. I think many people asked your same questions this morning when they saw the word MERCY.

Mercy is compassion and forgiveness. Grace is unmerited favor.

I loved visiting other people's blogs as part of FMF -- and I'm especially glad I've visited yours!

  2. I love the pictures at the beach of your precious family (on your header). I think you did a good job on explaining mercy! Love & prayers, in Jesus, Cynthia
